One of the delegates at the ongoing national conference has called for stiffer punishment for tax evaders in the country.

Hajia Bola Shagaya stated this in a media chat at the conference venue in Abuja on Wednesday.

Hajia Bola Shagaya, a Nigerian businesswoman and fashion enthusiast said Nigerians and corporate organisations would stop evading tax if their are strong laws against tax evaders.

She noted that tax payment rate is still very low in Nigeria.

“If everybody that suppose to pay tax both individuals and corporate organizations are paying their tax as at when due, there will be more revenue for government to develop this country.

“People evade tax because the existing laws against tax evaders are weak. Government must introduce stiffer penalties against them. If there are stiffer laws in place, tax payment rate would improve greatly.” She added.

She urged Nigerians to imbibe tax payment culture, adding that advanced nations such as United Kingdom develop their country through effective taxation. “You dare not evade tax in UK, the punishment is so hard. So Nigerians must be ready to do the right thing by paying their tax as at when due.” Shagaya said.
