Finally, Mantu Dismantled.
Oludare S. Fase Published August 3, 2008
Former deputy senate president of Nigeria Ibrahim Mantu was no doubt one of the most powerful
politicians in Nigeria between 2001-2007. He was a master of the senate politics as he survived a number
of Senate Presidents. Mantu’s long influence in the senate and Nigeria Politics was due to his unflinching
romance with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his surrogates.
However this influence was shattered following his recent loss at the re-scheduled Plateau central senatorial
elections. The defeat ends his third term bid to the senate where he held sway for about seven years. Many
factors are responsible for Mantu’s failure to return to the Nigeria senate.
Atiku’s factor
The Atiku camp will be pleased with this development considering the fact that Mantu was one of the
apostles of Obasanjo’s third term bid. This camp would never forgive Mantu for thwarting the ambition of
their man to succeed Obasanjo as the President of Nigeria.
Dariye's Factor
Mantu fought Gov. Joshua Dariye to a standstill because he SEEMIMGLY saw Dariye as a threat to his senatorial election, Reports ahd it that the governor was nursing a senatorial ambition.
Mantu who felt threatened with Dariye's move used his Aso rock influence to fight Dariye to
a standstill.
Mark's Factor
It is natural that the present Senate President David Mark will not be comfortable to see Mantu sitting in the senate due to his super influence in the chamber and among senators. Some reports had it that during last year senatorial election across the country, David Mark was said to have left his own election in Benue state to monitor and perhaps manipulate things against Mantu in Plateau state central senatorial election. Nothwithstanding Mantu won election then, only to be thrown away by the tribunal.
Thanks for this defeat because David Mark still sees Mantu as a threat to his position in the chamber.
Third Term Factor
We all know that Ibrahim Mantu was one of the biggest architects of the infamous third term ambition of
former President Olusegun Obasajo. As the then deputy senate president, Mantu was automatically the
chairman of the Senate constitution review committee which was saddled with the responsibilities of
‘robbing’ Nigerians by amending the constitution to favour President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He was in charge of the review committee which was heavily funded in the villa by Obasanjo’s stooges.
There were reports of huge money bags exchanging hands among politicians and senators in order to
support the reports of the constitution review committee where Mantu was baba’s hit man on that satanic
third term project.
However, the good lord rescued Nigerians out of the jaws of hyena Mantu and others as the ignoble
ambition was killed during the second reading of the of the bill on the floor of the senate. The death of the
reports of Mantu’s committee sparked off noisy celebrations from the opposing camp and across the
country and that apparently marked the beginning of the end of Mantu’s influence in the senate and his
constituency. And just recently, the ghost of the failed third term project haunted him to the electoral field.
His senatorial political coffin was nailed. Mantu has finally been dismantled.
On a good day, Mantu would have won his re-election bid easily considering his powerful influence in the
last eight years in Nigeria politics; he would not have been disgraced if he had used the influence to
attract developmental projects to his constituency rather than championing the failed third time project. If
Satty Gogwin, Mantu’s successor learn from Mantu’s pitfalls he will reign long, if not then Mantu’s ruin
awaits for him.
I will simply end this article with this famous quotation of John F. Kennedy in a Speech delivered in
Indianapolis in April 12, 1959 He said ‘The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.'
One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger -
but recognize the opportunity
