Tragedy As 4 Siblings Die In Lagos Building Collapse

BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Four siblings have died in a collapsed building tragedy at Magodo area of Lagos, Nigeria on Saturday.

The siblings were sleeping when the 3-bedroom bungalow building collapsed as a result of mound slide in the area, while their father was lucky to have escaped death.

The incident occurred at No. 50 Otun Araromi Street, Orisa, Magodo, behind Magodo Phase 1 at about 4.50 am.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service, Nigerian Police from Magodo Police Station and Isheri Police Station responded to the emergency.

The General Manager, LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele said a mound slide washed down by rain in the early morning rain led to the collapse of the bungalow, saying that the four children were buried in the collapsed building.

The father of the children is Godwin Odia, 50, from Edo State who escaped the tragedy by the whisker. The deceased are Isayo Odia, 23; Clinton Odia, 13; Da-silver Odia 15 and Endurance Odia, 10.

“The four dead bodies were recovered after digging through the sand. Another slide occurred six houses away from the incident site about 10.05am on another bungalow, but the occupant ran out immediately for safety,” said LASEMA boss

He stated that the agency had been engaging in advocacy for people living in flood-prone areas to relocate to avert more disasters, just like the collapsed building which is located in a valley prone to flood.
