UN Appoints New Syrian War Mediator

The United Nations (UN) has appointed its new representative – mediator, Staffan De Mistura, to end the two years old Syrian civil war.
The world body Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon announced the appointment Thursday. De Mistura, a former UN envoy to Afghanistan and Iraq replaced the immediate past mediator, Lakhdar Brahimi
UN said the replacement became necessary as the crisis in Syria instead of subsiding escalated and due to recent re-election of the incumbent President Bashar Al-Assad.
Ki-Moon said he consulted many stakeholders, including the Syrian government, revealing further that an Arab League Diplomat and Egyptian, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy has also been appointed as De Mistura’s Deputy.
Syrian authorities appears indifferent on the latest development as its UN Ambassador, Bashar Ja’afari said: “The Syrian government is examining the Secretary-General’s decision.”
