Yar’Adua announces much awaited amnesty to Niger
Delta militants

Oludare Sunday Fase |  African Examiner | posted: June 26, 2009

PRESIDENT Umaru Yar’Adua has announced the much publicized amnesty
for the militants of the Niger Delta area  saying “today, the 25th day of June
2009, the Federal Government takes another decisive step in our avowed
commitment to bringing enduring peace, security, stability, and development
to our nation’s Niger Delta.

The president made the announcement for the amnesty after “acceptance of
the recommendations of the Presidential Panel setting out the terms,
procedures, and processes of the grant of an amnesty to Niger Delta
militants, the National Council of State was, today, consulted,” which
approved the amnesty

Yar’Adua said the amnesty would be open for the militants to disarm in  60
days in which they will be crushed and treated like criminals if they fail to give
up violence.

According to the President, the amnesty  will cover even militants, who are
currently under arrest or undergoing trial, including Henry Okah, and
Government Ekpemukpolo, alias Tompolo.

“It is my fervent hope that all militants in the Niger Delta will take advantage
of this amnesty and come out to join in the quest for the transformation of
our dear nation. The offer of amnesty is open to all militants for a period of
60 days,”  Yar’Adua said.
