(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Imo state government, has officially reacted to the Saturday’s early morning attack on the Country home of Governor Hope Uzodinma Omuma, in Oru East Council area of the state, saying the incident was politically motivated.
Two security aides attached to the residence were reportedly killed while part of the building and some vehicles were set on fire by the hoodlums who also engaged in heavy gunfire during the attack.
African Examiner recalls that the incident is coming less than three weeks after unknown gunmen attacked the police headquarters and the correctional centre in Owerri, the Imo state capital, setting 38 vehicles ablaze and freeing a total of 1,844 inmates.
In the last few weeks, police stations have also come under serious attack in the South East states of Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu states, with many police officers killed.
Imo state Commissioner for information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba, in a reaction, said that security operatives successfully repelled the hoodlums who invaded the governor’s residence at about 9am.
He however, disclosed that there were few casualties in the cross fire that ensued, adding that the state government had directed security agencies to investigate the incident and arrest those behind it.
“A group of hoodlums numbering about 15 and driving in a motorcade of three vehicles accompanied by a tipper loaded with used tyres stormed the country home of the governor and attempted to burn down the house.
“However, vigilance security operatives attached to the governor’s house successfully repelled the attack and consequently minimized the damage they had planned to unleash.
According to him, “Preliminary investigation suggests that the foiled attack may have been politically sponsored.
African Examiner reports that following the rising wave of insecurity in the region, South-East governors had recently held a security summit in Owerri, during which they announced a joint security outfit, codenamed ‘Ebube Agu’ to battle the situation .
