(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Health, they say, is wealth, and no nation can be developed, nor rural communities attain its desired goals without a healthy manpower.
To this end, any responsible government ought to prioritize and take the issue of the health sector very seriously by providing its citizens, including rural dwellers quality and affordable health care facilities with adequate medical professionals.
But regrettably, over the years in Nigeria, including Enugu, and other states in South East geo political zone of the country, governments at all levels have not really impressed the people, or lived up to expectation in this all Important sector, leading to Incessant untimely deaths.
It’s a known fact that the government’s continued neglect and relegation of the health sector to the background over the years has been responsible for the high level of medical tourism in the country, though, amongst the rich who can afford such foreign trips.
The ugly development, particularly at the grass root level has no doubt led to the sudden and painful demise of bread winners in many families who died in their respective homes due to lack of financial strength to seek attention in medical facilities.
However, many thanks to private individuals, Philanthropists and groups who have always used their God given personal wealth to intervene in saving lives of their people in several communities of various states of the country.
In Enugu state for instance, one of such medical intervention that has helped in saving scores of lives and giving hope to hopeless citizens with various health challenges is the Obi Ebere Chukwu Awgu Health Mission Foundation, which has really touched many lives and rekindled hope of the sick natives.
The foundation has brought medical succor to the downtrodden in the old Greater Awgu Province in Enugu West senatorial district of the state through effective health care interventions.
Just recently, the foundation embarked on a Three-day health outreach outing in the locality where it intervened in the health challenges of scores of the residents of the area.
The organization strongly believes in the assertion that credibility is earned when words and actions are consistent.
True to this fact, the Obi Ebere Chukwu Awgu Health Mission Foundation has consistently, through its numerous health initiatives across the old greater Awgu province, brought immense succor to the people of these communities.
It has truly bridged the gap between the people at the grassroot and health care centres. By the proactive approach, individuals have been so privileged to access essential health tips, screening, treatment, and attention from medical professionals present at each outreach of the Foundation.
The overall outcome of the outreach is far-reaching, as it has enabled the under-served members of the communities under the province to take charge of their overall well-being, promote healthy lifestyle, and change the psychology of the people of the communities.
Founded in February 2024 by Rev.Fr. Ude Kingsley Amobichukwu, the Foundation set for itself, to bring free medical succor to the downtrodden, using well trained medical experts and collaborations with members of the local communities, creating a network of support and ideas that enhances the reach and impact, so set by the Foundation.
Immediately after its registration by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and with its desire to meet up with the huge health care gap within the locality, the Foundation swung into action by firstly, inaugurating a team of medical experts, led by its Chief Medical Consultant, Dr. Alphonsus Okoh, a consultant Ophthalmologist, to help carry out a feasibility study of the main health challenge of the people of Amulor Ogboli Awgu and Ndiagu-Ogboli, both in Ogboli-Ohaja Autonomous Community, Awgu Town, agrarian communities in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Amulor Ogboli Awgu was immediately scheduled for the 2024 outreach, and to the glory of God, the Foundation held its inaugural outreach on 24th August, 2024.
During the health outreach in 2024, about 400 people attended, mostly aged men, women, and children, and they were all attended to by the team of medical experts present.
To further bridge this wanton health care gap, the rural community of Ndiagu-Ogboliwas chosen as a venue for the 2025 health outreach due to its characterized unique demography and persistent health features that presents both challenges and opportunities for the health outreach.
Also, due to its remoteness and considering the fact that vast majority of members of this community are predominantly farmers and mostly lacking access to basic health care services, culminating in residents having to travel long distances to access health care, which often prevent them from seeking necessary care as required.
Armed with these glaring facts, the medical committee was therefore tasked to, Identify the prevailing health challenges common in the community, Identify the possible health intervention suitable for the community and the appropriate medical consumables needed for the outreach.
After the studies, it was observed that the prevailing health challenges common to the community includes, Eye challenges, Rheumatoid, Arthritis related pains BP related ailments.
To effectively address these identified health concerns within the community (Ndiagu-Ogboli community), Awgu Town, a multi-faceted approach, was adopted, namely, providing practical, massive information/re-orientation through public enlightenment via pamphlets, personalized interaction, and town criers.
Other approach includes educational initiatives through Essay competition, Themed “Life is Sacred, come let us protect it”, where students/Youths from select schools were meant to write an essay on the above theme and subsequent training sessions by the Nigerian Red Cross Society and Safety Experts from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, to serve as health and safety vanguard in their respective communities.
Also, to ensure that a successful health outreach is achieved, there was the constitution of different committees to help facilitate the smooth implementation.
Such committees include Medical, Research, Data/Media, Pre/Post Event Evaluation, Logistics, Education, Welfare/Administration, Local Organising Committee (LOC) amongst others.
Each of these committees were all saddled with the sole responsibility of designing workable templates for the smooth achievement of the set objectives for the outreach by the Foundation.
It took the Foundation about 12 months to fully come-up with the eventual hosting of the 2025 outreach, which was divided into phases, which included; Community Engagements,

The approach ensured that the outreach met-up with the specific need of the community without breaking any protocol culturally and otherwise.
The scheduling of Essay writing competition Themed “cultural Traditions that promotes well-being” 5 Months -7 Months was another wonderful aspect of the programme.
Within the period, an educational initiative, through Essay competition with selected schools from Awgu Town in Awgu Local government area, and Achi, in Oji-River LGA (Alpha Secondary School Awgu, Boys Secondary School Awgu, Presentation Secondary School Awgu, Perfection Secondary School Awgu, Corpus Christi College Achi, Urban Secondary School Awgu, Urban Girls Secondary School, and Rosary High School, Awgu), to further bring these teeming youths from their respective schools, up-to-date on the need for a healthy lifestyle that promotes healthy living
