Enugu Attack: Death Toll Rises To Over 40 As Governor Ugwuanyi Donates N5m To Affected Area

ENUGU, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The death toll in Monday’s attack on  Nimbo community in Uzo Uwani council area of Enugu State by suspected Fulani herdsmen has increased to over 40, just as Enugu state government  donates 5 million naira to affected area.

This followed Tuesday’s discovery of more dead bodies in surrounding bushes in the affected area.

AFRICAN EXAMINER recalled that initially, about 30 people were reported killed during the attack which also left scores injured, several houses destroyed.

Our Correspondent gathered that since the incident, occurred, there has been mass exodus of people from the community to neighbouring villages.

The invaders, had during the early morning attack burnt Schools, churches and residential homes.

One of the affected church, building,christ Holy church Onueke Nimbo was completely razed down by the fulani herdsmen during attack.

Our Correspondent who visited some of the hospitals in Nsukka, where over 20 survivors are battling with severe pains as a result of various degree of injuries they sustained during the attack, reports that  the most of the victims who had serious machete cuts were seen wailing on their various beds.

At Royal cross hospital Nsukka, one of the victim, and ex-councillor in the area Ugwu Obgu, was also seen receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who visited the troubled community, had expressed dismay over the incident pledging the state government assistance to the victims.

Ugwuanyi made a donation of 5 million naira to the community and appealed to those that fled their homes to come back as government is doing all it could to restore normalcy to the area.

He said “Be that as it may, what has happened, has happened; this is not time to blame any body; government will do what it is supposed to do.

“I understand that economic activities have been shut down here, we will as a government make available the sum of N5m to the leaders of this community and then from there proceed to the hospital, settle all the bills and then later we go to the next line of action. he stated.

“May I therefore, call on the entire people of Enugu State to please fast for two days and put this into the hands of God; Enugu is in the hands of God.

“I re-assure this community that the government and the people of Enugu State are behind you; your pain is our pain; you are the true heroes of democracy and we cannot abandon you; that’s why I am here”.
