Hundreds of Students Escaped Death As Tanker Ran Into School

By Ayo Balogun, Lagos

LAGOS, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Hundreds of students of Coroner School, Lagos escaped death as a tanker conveying diesel lost control and ran inside the school premises.

Management of the school will be thanking God as the incident occurred around 10pm on Thursday when the students had closed for the day.

It would have been a tragedy if the incident had occurred in broad day light while the students were still in school.

Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe said the tanker was loaded with 33,000 litres of diesel which lost control while descending the Anthony Bridge and entered the school spilling its content.

He said the tanker broke through the fence, entered the school before spilling its content.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA were at the scene of the incident on Friday trying to evacuate the truck.

According to Fadipe, the incident was effectively managed and was towed away by LASTMA on Friday.

“LASTMA succeeded in lifting and evacuating only the trailer head. The fuel tanker with chassis and tyres are yet to be evacuated,” he said.

He said what saved the day was that the students were not in school when the incident occurred or else, there would have been a tragedy.
