African Leaders must implement laws enacted by their Parliaments-
Bankole
By Oludare Fase and Taiye Olayemi in Toronto published march 30, 2009
The Speaker of the Nigeria House of representatives Hon. Oladimeji Bankole has
strongly advocated for the strict implementation of the laws passed by the legislature
saying ''the prevalence of under-development in Africa is likely to disappear as national
budgets will be followed for the good of the people.''

The speaker said this while speaking on the topic  Africa: Good governance and the next
generation at the annual Oputa lecture held on March 27, 2009 at Osgoode Hall  Law
School, York University, Toronto, Canada.

Bankole further explained that the rights of the African people must be respected and
protected adding that government must at all times act within the limits of the law. He
also stressed the importance of the independent and strong judiciary where obedient to
courts order must be the norm.

On the development of infrastructure, Bankole said African leaders must employ the
transparent use of different forms of public and private partnership in executing
infrastructural development for the well being of the people.

He noted that African leaders are performing below their potentials adding that ''the
federal government of Nigeria is making massive infrastructure investment in power
generation and reactivation of the railway system.''

On enduring democracy, the speaker canvassed for  a concerted efforts to ensure that
leaders and followers work hard to ensure  that votes of the citizens during election count.

According to him, when fraudulent people rig or shoot themselves into power they are not
accountable to the citizens therefore public accountability and good governance become
the major causality.
