(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Nigerians on social media are not pleased with the arrest of former Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Commission.
The African Examiner had earlier reported that the anti-graft agency had arrested Tambuwa, who is a member of the opposition, African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Also, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha was also invited by the EFCC.
This development has sparked reactions from lots of people who believed that the EFCC is targeting only members of the opposition and ignoring politicians in the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC).
Reacting, EFCC in a statement on X, EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede frowned at the accusations of partisanship as he stated that the Commission’s mandate is to investigate corruption irrespective of political affiliation.
He said: “If I am not condemned for investigating both former and serving strong ruling party Governors and Ministers, I should not be condemned for also investigating opposition figures.
“The Commission pointed out that “several political figures of all divides are answering charges of alleged economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption,” including “some key figures of the ruling party owing to allegations of corrupt practices.
“Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption.”
The statement of the EFCC chairman sparked more reactions as some netizens were of the view that the agency should concentrate more on politicians in the APC, whom they believe to be more corrupt.
The African Examiner presents some of their thoughts below, as seen on X

@Mallam_jabeer writes: “Dear @officialEFCC, Where’s Ganduje? Where’s Yahaya Bello? Where’s Bello Matawalle? Where’s Tinubu? Where’s Atiku Bagudu? Where are the remaining Thi3ves? Selective prosecution is bad.”
@IU_Wakilii writes: “Emeka Ihedioha, who served as governor for just seven months, has been invited by the EFCC to answer questions. His real crime is not being in the APC. Ganduje, whom we have all seen on tape, is moving scot-free. Yahaya Bello, whom EFCC claimed paid school fees with taxpayers’ money worth over a billion naira, is still very free.”
@gh0st_CFC writes: “We all know what we are doing in this country. They can’t deceive us anymore. It’s quite clear to the blind what they’re doing.”
