Dangote: How Africa Has Turned To Dumping Ground For Substandard Petroleum Products

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has stated that Africa is now a dumping ground for substandard petroleum products because of overreliance on imports.
Dangote stated this when he spoke in a recent interview with journalists.
According to him, his decision to build the Dangote refinery was because he has the drive to make Nigeria self-sufficient in refined petroleum products and to spark similar efforts across Africa, irrespective of numerous challenges and resistance.
He disclosed that the massive project was because of a vision to make sure of energy independence for Nigeria and the wider continent.
“Apart from Algeria and Libya, which are self-sufficient, virtually every other African country is an importer,” Dangote said.
He pointed out that this situation exists irrespective of Africa’s vast crude oil reserves, and he talked about the urgent need to create functional refineries across the continent.
Dangote pointed out that many people doubted the Dangote Group’s capacity to deliver a project of such magnitude.
He stated that some even persons advised him to abandon it because of the failed attempts by sovereign nations to execute similar ventures.
“People think building a refinery is like building a house. But, as I always say, if I had known the scale of challenges we would face, I wouldn’t have started at all,” the billionaire said.
“We were fortunate as a group because we didn’t fully grasp what we were getting into, but we believed that nothing is impossible.”
