(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The news that President Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri after former president Muhammadu Buhari has sparked reactions on social media.
The African Examiner had earlier reported that President Tinubu, during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on Thursday in honour of the late Nigerian leader, who died on July 13, 2025, in London, had announced this decision.
“In honour of his memory, will the special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) adopt the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri?” Tinubu asked during the meeting.
This development has attracted reactions as many netizens were of the view that the late Nigerian leader shouldn’t be named after the prestigious Maiduguri University, but any University in Katsina or Daura, where he comes from.

@GarShehu writes: “After a state burial like no other, the renaming of the University of Maiduguri after the late President Muhammadu Buhari is an honour well deserved. Heartening to see this happening in our lifetime in Nigeria. My personal view.”
@RealPhenom1521 writes: “Please explain this: “Immortalizing the name of a former president who died less than three years after leaving office is no problem, despite the general poor rating of his administration, but naming a university after a man during whose 8-year presidential reign the universities were on strike for 20 months (representing more than 20% of his tenure) is both a travesty of reality and deep mockery of the university system. How demoralised both the academic and the non-academic staff of the renamed university, who are still owed three months of their salaries that the Buhari’s administration failed to pay, will be each time they see and/or write the word “Buhari” as part of the name of their university! Traumatising and nauseating! Why didn’t the FG collaborate with her Nigerien counterpart to name the railway he constructed to Niger Republic after him!? It is a shame!”
@Ohijeme writes: “Person wey no go school, wey no add value to education, wey no build or renovate schools Una carry a whole university name after him. Tinubu is massaging the egos of the north he is desperate.”
@TrendfusionNG writes: “The South West didn’t accept UNILAG to be named after a dealer, wondering if the North will accept their best uni to be named after a divisive and failed leader.”
@NdulaJajaPutaya writes: “We from Unimaid are not happy is just that there is nothing we can do about it. MOH’D BUHARI SENATE BUILDING MOH’D BUHARI CENTRE FOR… AT THE UNIMAID TEACHING HOSPITAL AISHA BUHARI HOSTEL. There is the Airport for God’s sake, Monday Market etc. why Unimaid.”
@HAHayatu writes: “Mr Man we reject it, let them rename the University in Daura after him not our Unimaid. He is just playing politics but instead of getting votes believe this will cost him votes. If Unliag renamed after Abiola by GEJ was rejected we took can reject renaming of Unimaid.”
@Paulblessed84 writes: “WHAT AN INSENSITIVE CHOICE OF UNIVERSITY!!! THE SAME MAIDUGURI HE FAILED!!! … HE PROMISED TO BRING BACK THE CHIBOK GIRLS IF ELECTED…. DID HE? … INSECURITY WAS HIGHEST IN CHIBOK WHEN HE WAS IM POWER!! HOW WILL THE PARENTS OF THOSE GIRLS STILL IN CAPTIVITY FELLS??”

@moshoodojo writes: “Why naming a University after someone who doesn’t value education.”
@AustinOjei writes: “A new University like Federal University, Dutsinma, would have been better. That would have at least upgraded the status of that University. UNIMAID is already a brand. What has been done seems more or less a distortion.”
@Zachz_gadzama1 writes: “Bigots everywhere…what happened to all the institutions in Katsina or rather the international conference centre recently renamed after Tinubu?”

@Agbakocho writes: “Is a dishonor to academic institutions in Nigeria though Someone who did not possess any university certification, under his regime, universities were closed down for 9months, first in history Make una just allow the man rest in peace if he can He already asked 4 forgiveness.”
