South Africa Demolishes Nigerian Developer’s High-Rise Complexes

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Authorities in the City of Tshwane have destroyed two high-rise complexes owned by Nigerian property developer George Asaba after lots of court rulings declared that the structures are unlawful.

The demolitions were after a March ruling by the Gauteng High Court, which directed that the buildings on Luttig Street, Pretoria West, be demolished.

The court discovered that Asaba did not submit approved building plans, and this makes the complex unsafe, a health hazard, and also violates zoning and safety regulations.

Asaba’s appeal was rejected in April, with the court upholding the right of the municipality to proceed.

Also, Asaba was held in contempt of court after he ignored a July 16, 2024, order halting construction.

City officials stated that Asaba will bear the costs of the demolition.

Kholofelo Morodi, Tshwane’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate and Shared Services, applauded the ruling, describing it as a decisive victory in the fight against unlawful developments.

“This ruling is a turning point in the City’s efforts to reclaim urban spaces from unlawful developments and send a strong message that no one is above the law,” Morodi said.

She further disclosed that illegal buildings, land grabs, and property hijackings had long shown contempt for service delivery and public safety, assuring that the city’s multiparty coalition government would start going after culprits.

The City disclosed that demolitions would continue across Tshwane because of its plan against illegal structures.
